Aldbourne Motor Service – “The start”

Aldbourne Civic Society – scanned in 1999 for the Millennium Exhibition 2000

I have often wondered about the date for this photo, and the start of the Aldbourne Motor Service by G.W.R. Think that the AF number plate shows that the vehicle was registered in Truro (although very happy to be corrected on that).

This morning one of my Twitter friends pointed me in the direction of Great Western’s very first motor service (thanks Lee!), and this fascinating website for the Lambourn Valley Railway https://www.lambournvalleyrailway.info/

Great Western’s very first local bus service was inaugurated on 17th August 1925 and ran from Swindon to Lambourn, travelling via Stratton Park, Wanborough and Aldbourne … In 1932, Great Western ceased bus operations altogether.
